Founders and investors should put mental health at the forefront of their New Year's Resolutions ð
Hustle, hustle, hustle. It's a lifestyle many believe is critical for building the next big thing. While Elon Musk builds cars and sends rockets to space, and Jack Dorsey manages two publicly-traded companies, it can be hard to convince yourself that 40-hour weeks, self care, and a patient approach is the best way to build and invest in successful and long-lasting companies.
Earlier this year, [Alexis Ohanian]( co-founder of Reddit and Initialized Capital, set out to warn Silicon Valley about [the dangers of "hustle porn."]( "This idea that unless you are suffering, grinding, working every hour of every day, youâre not working hard enough⦠This is one of the most toxic, dangerous things in tech right now," he said. "Itâs such bulls**t, such utter bulls**t. It has deleterious effects not just on your business but on your wellbeing."
Ohanian's right. According to [a study by Michael Freeman]( entrepreneurs are 50% more likely to report having a mental health condition. As [highlighted in TechCrunch]( founders are:
- 2X more likely to suffer from depression
- 6X more likely to suffer from ADHD
- 3X more likely to suffer from substance abuse
- 10X more likely to suffer from bi-polar disorder
- 2X more likely to have psychiatric hospitalization;
- and 2X more likely to have suicidal thoughts
The good news is, more and more resources are becoming available to help foster better habits. Some investors even offer to pay for therapy for their founders. Ariana Huffington's [Thrive Global]( is on a mission to end the stress and burnout epidemic. [Torch]( helps founders be better leaders, with one-on-one counseling. Startups like [Light]( are building minimalist phones to help cut down on technology addiction. And startup investing platforms like [Republic]( ensure a community and support network of fellow founders and investors, and allows investors to play an active role in the startup's lifecycle.
So this New Year, let's make a commitment to ourselves, our companies, and our portfolios to take care of ourselves and our teams, and build something long-lasting.
