A Look at the Baylor Chapel Controversy FEBRUARY 20, 2020 THE BEST OF RELEVANTMAGAZINE.COM STORY O

A Look at the Baylor Chapel Controversy FEBRUARY 20, 2020 [RELEVANT THIS WEEK]( THE BEST OF RELEVANTMAGAZINE.COM [Hero-5.jpg]( STORY OF THE WEEK [A Look at the Baylor Chapel Controversy]( [rn-x.png] Last week, some conservative students and alumni at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, went public with their disapproval of sentiments shared by guest speaker Kaitlin Curtice. Curtice spoke at Baylor’s chapel service about the fight against white supremacy, equality for women and rights for indigenous people groups in the United States. Curtice is an author, poet and citizen of the Potawatomi Citizen Band Nation. During her speech, Curtice discussed the genocide and displacement faced by her indigenous ancestors. The chief complaint seemed to be their claim that Curtice addressed her opening prayer to “Mother Mystery.” As the YCT posted online: “As Christians, we don’t pray to ‘Mother Mystery.’ We believe in ‘one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages….’” “I mean, she didn’t pray to God and that’s what’s most offensive,” Jake Neidert of the Baylor Young Conservatives of Texas told reporters. However, RELEVANT has received audio of all three chapel services from that morning and can independently verify that there no mention of “Mother Mystery” in her prayer or any part of her speech. When reaching out for comment over Twitter prior to receiving the audio, the Baylor Young Conservatives of Texas told RELEVANT that they stood by their allegations adding, “If she did not say that, we would apologize for specifically highlighting that, but it was only one of many problems.” You can read more about the story here. [• Rich Wilkerson Jr. Forgave the People Who Stole His Car and Offered Them an Internship at His Church]( Last week, Vous Church pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr. had his car stolen. Fortunately, it was found a few days later, but in an Instagram video Wilkerson addressed the individuals who stole his car (who have not been caught) and offered his forgiveness. He also invited them to church and even offered them a three-month internship. "Whoever you are that took our car, we think there’s about three of you,” Wilkerson said. “I want to let you know, ‘We love you, we’re for you and thank you for leaving it somewhere that we could find it’ … I want you to come to Vous Church. And if you come to the 10 or 12:15 service, come to the front afterward and just say, ‘Hey, I was the one that Rich was challenging. I was a part of that incident.’” Wilkerson said that he forgives the three individuals and said that he wouldn’t be pressing charges. [• Watch Chance Perform ‘Ultralight Beam’ at the NBA All-Star Game]( Chance the Rapper was among the artists providing entertainment at this weekend’s NBA All-Star Game and made an interesting song choice during his mini-concert: Kanye West’s 2016 single “Ultralight Beam”. Kanye was actually sitting courtside during some of the weekend’s events, though he didn’t perform with his fellow Chicago rapper. “Ultralight Beam,” from Kanye’s Life of Pablo album, features an all-time great Chance guest verse. You can watch the entire performance here. [• The Enneagram Question We All Need to Stop Asking]( The gift of the Enneagram is hindered when we fixate on solidifying our own type and have to know others' types. The Enneagram is a journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth. It’s not some “fun fact” to whip out at a party. Guessing other people’s type is a game that could actually be more harmful than helpful. Here’s why. [• ‘Doubting’ Thomas Had Questions … Just Like You]( One of the biggest lies facing the Church today is that to have faith we must never ask for revelation or wisdom. Questions don’t have to be a hindrance to our faith. They can be a catalyst! Questions can be the very thing God uses to show us who He is. This week, we look at what “doubting” Thomas of the New Testament can teach us about asking big questions—and how true faith isn’t simply the absence of doubt.
