Finding deeper meaning in life’s ups and downs. Real. True. Sometimes painful. But, always me

Finding deeper meaning in life’s ups and downs. Real. True. Sometimes painful. But, always meaningful. Living for the now can leave a void that’s hard to see, but even harder to heal. Yet a life of authenticity - the beauty as well as the pain - can give us so much more. Today’s cultural obsession with pursuing and worshiping a curated version of life’s moments, a digital highlight reel captured and shared on social media, is a reflection of our drive to feel, and to be seen. But it’s an abbreviated reality, not an augmented one. Where we substitute virtual experience for real-world presence, we feed the now at the expense of something more profound. Temporary fulfillment—a photo, a “like”—helps us forget about our unhappiness, anxiety, and pain, if just for a moment. [Woman sitting with head in hand]( But we all long for a path in life that is real, true, and meaningful. We lean into the present with hope; embracing joy, celebrating possibility, enduring trauma and making room for grief. We long for beauty and the completeness of love. We are survivors, all of us. We’ve wrestled the promiscuity of life, the inebriation of the thrill and the lie of casual intimacy, and come away with our own scars. We don’t want more. We just want what is real and true. Could chasing momentary happiness be keeping us from experiencing real fulfillment? [Silhouette of person jumping off dock into lake]( In authentic community, we can find the faith, truth, and beauty we crave at an intimate level. Together, taking the time to sit with our own and our neighbors’ discomfort and hopes, we can push through the facade that has become a way of life, and revolutionize ourselves and our culture. In a community of faith, truth, and beauty, we can find hope in our pain and honesty in our love.
