The Fed’s preferred inflation measure, Personal Consumption Expenditure Pirce Index, rose 0.4% in August – a 12-month gain of 4.3%. That’s the biggest jump in 30 years! But just for the record: • The United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization’s index of international prices of commonly traded food commodities has exploded, with prices in September up 32.8% from September 2020. • Those higher prices are in the pipeline and headed to food processors and restaurants, where they will add to prices that are already higher. Kraft Heinz Company says inflation is up across the board, and consumers will have to get used to paying higher prices. What went wrong? With hundreds of economists on the Fed’s payroll and hundreds more in academia being subsidized by the Fed, how did the monetary authorities miss this so badly?
