It made me worried about the danger of complacency. Recently we learned of the Supreme Court’s ill-founded decision to allow Alabama’s 2022 election to take place on a congressional map judicially determined to be racially manipulated. It’s an ideological abuse of the Court’s power and stands in the way of delivering Black voters the opportunity to elect candidates of their choice. It is also a sure sign that we’ll continue to face significant challenges across the redistricting landscape and that we can’t take anything for granted. Here’s the cold, hard truth: Extreme conservatives want us to see these new headlines and let our guard down. Why? Because if we do, they can gerrymander the remaining maps -- plain and simple. Instead, we must build on our success, persevere after challenges and finish strong. The map-drawing process shouldn’t be treated like a horse race -- and we can’t let our guard down anytime we see a positive or negative headline.
