And when legislatures aren’t accountable to the will of the people, they feel emboldened to ram through unpopular laws — taking away things like affordable health care, reproductive freedom, and even basic civil rights. Gerrymandered legislatures will try to hold onto their unearned power no matter what, authorizing mass purges of voting rolls, erecting barriers to voter registration, and making it harder for regular folks to cast a ballot by closing polling places, reducing voting hours, and imposing draconian voter ID laws.
