It’s a tense moment when you’ve finally assembled your mix inside your home studio. You?

It’s a tense moment when you’ve finally assembled your mix inside your home studio. You’ve written a song. Or maybe learned a favorite song of yours and really got it down. Your vocals are powerful and emotional. Your guitar’s tuned, and you’ve recorded the riff perfectly. You’ve done multiple takes for the different tracks - vocals, guitar, background vocals, the various instruments… And it’s done! The mix is waiting inside your DAW to be put together into a radio-ready song… and you press play. And it doesn’t sound half as good as you thought it would be. The vocals are muffled. The guitar is too bright, too tinny. The drum tracks you recorded? Too overbearing and muddy. That nice countermelody you wrote for the chorus? Barely audible at the climax of the song. So you start mixing. You start hacking away with EQ. Maybe bring in a couple of other plugins to make the vocals interesting. Distortion to get some grittiness, maybe a chorus plugin to get it to stand out. Maybe a virtual amp on the guitar track to make it more mellow. You grind away at your mix for hours, and it’s starting to sound decent. So you take a little break. You step outside, breathe in some fresh air, giving your ears a little rest, and then step back into your “audio cave” to get back at the mix. And the moment you press play, you think: “Who mixed this crappy mix?!” The balance is off, those vocals are out of control, and you can’t believe that you’ve poured in hours into this project only to get that as a result. Does that sound familiar? Before I understood mixing, that would happen to me on a regular basis. I’d pour my heart, soul, time and energy into a song I was recording and mixing. But I would constantly struggle with being satisfied with the results I got. Was it because I wasn’t trying hard enough? Far from it. Was it because I didn’t have the newest plugins to mix with? Nope. When I look back on it after being a recording & mixing engineer for almost 2 decades, the reason why I struggled with mixing in the past was clear. I didn’t have a system and process to approach mixing as a whole. I’m not opposed to learning tips and tricks on mixing to give your music an extra edge. But if you don’t have a series of steps to approach your mixes with, it’s like trying to bake a cake without a recipe. You may have all the right ingredients, but if you don’t have the right sequence to follow? It just gets messy, and nothing good comes out of it. And I can't let this situation happen to you and your mixes. And that’s why I created Mixing University - my flagship, all-comprehensive mixing course. So what’s inside Mixing University? Mixing University contains 5 in-depth video modules. There’s a lot of videos jam-packed into this course, but it isn’t about quantity here. It’s about quality, and giving you the knowledge and processes needed to mix radio-ready songs from your home studio. Without needing to invest hundreds, if not thousands of dollars into a new DAW and new fancy plugins. So here’s a quick overview of the 5 modules… Module 1: Mixing Preparation This module is all about setting you up for mixing success. You’ll be taught the mindsets to have for mixing that set you up to make the best sonic decisions, as well as what gear and studio setup you really need to mix music well. From creating a mixing sweet spot in your room to the 2 mixing technicalities you must know when mixing, it’s all inside this module. Module 2: Mixing Fundamentals This is where I get into the nuts and bolts of mixing - the steps to set up your mix in your DAW, as well as the sequence in which I mix a song. You’ll be taught how to decide which instrument to mix first, as well as my big secret to making your mixes sound good no matter what device or speaker they’re played on. You’ll also be shown an advanced mixing tactic that makes mixing faster and easier. (but use this tactic with caution!) Module 3: EQ & Compression What’s the bread and butter of mixing? Is it putting as many plugins as possible on a mix buss and sending all your tracks into it? Or is it putting countless effects on a vocal to try and get it to stand out? Nope - it’s EQ and compression and that’s what this module is about. You’ll be taught the 2 ways to use EQ, the biggest mistakes to avoid with the plugin, and much more. And for compression, you’ll be shown how exactly it works, the four components to mastering the plugin and the mistakes to avoid with it as well. Module 4: Mixing Walkthroughs This is my favorite part of the course and is what makes Mixing University so special. It could have been a separate course in it’s own right because it’s over 14 hours of content! In this module, I dive deep into mixing walkthroughs for 6 songs from different genres such as pop, rock, acoustic, country and metal, showing you every step to mix them and why I make the decisions I make. It’s the closest thing to being in the studio with a professional mixing engineer. From the mix setup, to the mix buss processing, to the mixing decisions I make on the vocals, guitars, drums, bass… you get to watch over my shoulder and learn how to apply the principles from the previous modules on real songs, step-by-step. Not only that, but you also get the stems for the songs so you can follow along and learn by doing. Module 5: Mixing Tricks Finally, Mixing University wraps up with a huge module on all the various mixing tricks that I’ve discovered and accumulated over the years I’ve worked as a full-time recording & mixing engineer. After you’ve mastered the fundamentals of mixing, this module will give you a palette of tricks to spice up your vocal tracks, make your guitar tracks shine, your drum tracks captivate, and take your mixes to the next level. How Mixing University works - Because Mixing University is video-based, you’ll be able to follow the course along from the comfort of your bedroom or home studio. Just open your laptop, press play, and watch as I teach you mixing, step-by-step. You’ll be able to follow along at home, using my personal mixing system on your own mixes… and you’ll be surprised at how quick your mixes improve, and how much better they sound.
