The Lauren Wolfe controversy, explained.]( Media Twitter erupted in anger over the weekend about the New York Times allegedly firing a woman who was working as an editor at the paper over a tweet. On January 19, Lauren Wolfe tweeted that President-elect Joe Biden's airplane landing at Joint Base Andrews gave her "chills." Right-wing commentators, including Glenn Greenwald, responded with vitriol, accusing the paper of record of bias. On January 21, reports emerged that Wolfe had been fired from the Times. The New York Times is distancing itself from the situation. The paper told Vox that Wolfe was not a full-time employee and was not under contract. Beyond that, it said it "didn’t end someone’s employment over a single tweet." The situation nevertheless fits into a larger narrative of news outlets harshly punishing people, especially women, who are the targets of online harassment. Vox's Anya van Wagtendonk explains the situation and why people are so mad at the Times.
