Social media companies are going to new lengths to limit Trump's reach. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ [View on the web]( [Recode]( [Click to view images]( [What will Facebook and Twitter do with Trump’s accounts now?]( Facebook and Twitter took some of the most dramatic measures yet to limit President Trump's ability to spread lies on their platforms Wednesday. After the president encouraged his supporters to storm the US Capitol — and they did it — the social media companies issued temporary bans on Trump's accounts. Facebook suspended the ability to post on Trump's page for 24 hours. Twitter blocked Trump from posting for 12 hours and vowed to ban him permanently if he didn't delete a handful of tweets that violate the company's policies. Still, the breach of the Capitol has given new reason for critics to call on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media companies to ban Trump from their platforms permanently. The argument is that Trump's behavior online has gone unchecked for so long that his vitriol is spilling out into the real world, inciting violence and wreaking havoc. One look need no further than Wednesday's events, when four people died following the pro-Trump riot on Capitol Hill, to see how online rhetoric can lead to offline harm. Recode's Rebecca Heilweil and Shirin Ghaffary spoke to Facebook and Twitter as the events were unfolding and report on what's next for Trump on social media.
