Ron Wyden helped create the Big Tech industry. Now he wants to hold it accountable.]( The next time Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg lies to the federal government, Sen. Ron Wyden thinks he should face prison time. Last year, the Oregon senator introduced a bill called the Mind Your Own Business Act that would create a set of privacy and security standards that Big Tech companies and data brokers must follow and hold tech executives accountable. But this year isn't unfolding quite the way anyone had planned. Instead of building the future of privacy legislation, Sen. Wyden finds himself looking to the past lately. The Trump administration has taken aim at Section 230, a law Wyden co-wrote in the 1990s that helped create the internet as we know it, which leaves Wyden defending some foundational principles of free speech. Plus, Covid-19 pandemic relief has taken over the legislative agenda, so Wyden's new law will have to wait. But that doesn't mean tech executives should rest easy, the senator says. Recode's Sara Morrison recently spoke to Sen. Wyden about his history with internet law and the future he envisions for privacy online.
