Posting $89 billion in sales and $5 billion in profits, the company just proved that the Covid-19 pandemic has been a boon for its business, despite billions of dollars in extra costs related to new health and safety efforts. “Prime members ... were shopping more often and with larger baskets,” Amazon Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky told reporters on a media call Thursday afternoon. Recode previously reported that Prime membership sales have risen significantly since the pandemic began. The big question now is: The record sales that prompted Amazon to pay workers more during the pandemic aren't abating — so will it reinstate those bonuses?
