[Donald Trumpâs first trip to the Bay Area since he was elected president was shrouded in secrecy.](Trump visited Silicon Valley on Tuesday, the first time since he was elected, but his biggest supporters in the area donât want to talk about him. Thatâs a big contrast when compared most Democratic political fundraisers, which are often public shows of force. [In an era and an industry]( where each campaign donation is a publicity crisis waiting to happen (remember the investor behind SoulCycle [who faced damaging boycotts](), people cannot run away â or at least shut up â fast enough.
- Even traditional Republicans are snubbing Trump: Meg Whitman, the billionaire former CEO of eBay who for decades was synonymous with the Silicon Valley GOP establishment, [has compared Trump to Hitler.]( A Whitman spokesperson said she âwill not be supporting Trump in any way this cycle.â Other prominent GOP donors in the area, like Oracleâs Larry Ellison and Ciscoâs former CEO John Chambers, declined to comment on Trump.

[Facebookâs policy chief quit in June, but he hasnât left.](As Facebookâs lead communicator, Elliot Schrage was the man behind Facebookâs apology tour in the aftermath of the Cambridge Analytica data-sharing scandal and the misinformation campaigns on the social network during the 2016 election. But although he said he was leaving the company 15 months ago, Bloomberg reports that he hasnât left the building. Instead, according to Bloomberg, âSchrage has been quietly helping the company on a number of initiatives as a full-time employee with a new title: vice president of special projects.â
- So what is he working on? According to Bloomberg: Libra. Facebookâs cryptocurrency project is probably the most high-profile and controversial project Schrage is focused on, but he is also working with researchers that are using Facebook data to study social mediaâs impact on elections. Itâs not unusual for employees to resign from a company and then stay around to advise their former employer, but whatâs less common is when executives announce their departure, find their replacement, then stick around as full-time employees, Bloomberg points out.

[Millions of patientsâ medical images and health data are sitting unprotected on the internet.](ProPublica found that the records of more than 5 million US patients are available to view on a typical web browser. After ProPublica alerted one company, MobilexUSA, security was tightened last week. Altogether, medical data from more than 16 million scans worldwide was available online, including names, birthdates, and, in some cases, Social Security numbers.
- How did this happen? ProPublica points out that itâs hard to pinpoint whoâs to blame. âUnder US law, health care providers and their business associates are legally accountable for securing the privacy of patient data,â but ProPublica found no evidence that patient data was copied from these systems. Instead, âthese records were often stored on servers that lacked the security precautions that long ago became standard for businesses and government agencies.â

[Tinder and Airbnb are pivoting to video.](Both Tinder and Airbnb are expanding their offerings by making original video programming. Which, as Vice News put it, âis an exciting new prospect that no one asked for.â Apparently, Tinder has finished filming a television series, âas owner Match Group Inc seeks to dive deeper into creating original content," according to Reuters. Tinderâs upcoming multi-episode series is set in an âapocalypticâ storyline, and doesnât have anything to do with swiping for dates. And ICYMI, Airbnb said in April that it was starting "to develop a slate of original shows to whet customersâ appetite for travel."
- Tinder has tried to break out of dating before: Vice points out that Tinder launched an editorial arm called "Swipe Life" last year. The site produces listicles and dating tips.
