New research out of China published in the journal Heart found that every serving of fried food you eat per week raises your risk of coronary heart disease and major cardiovascular events, such as a heart attack or stroke, by 2%-3%. And those who eat the most fried food every week are 28% more likely to have an event than folks who eat the least. This comes on the heels of a study last year that looked at more than 106,000 women ages 50 to 79 who participated in the Women's Health Initiative to assess the impact of fried food on their health. It turned out that eating fried food â especially fried chicken and fried fish or shellfish â is even more dangerous than the Chinese study indicates. This U.S.-based study said women who ate at least one serving a week of fried chicken had a 13% higher risk of death from all causes and a 12% higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease, compared to women who ate no fried chicken. And one serving of fried shellfish a week upped their risk of cardiovascular death by 13%. Now is as good a time as any to ditch French fries, fried chicken, and fried shrimp.
