What happened after that??? The market proceeded to do what it has done SO many years throughout history… It has stair-stepped higher, free from any recessionary forces. And do you know how you could have made a better prediction that these overpaid clowns? By simply observing January’s price action. That’s right, January is my FAVORITE time of year because of one of Wall Street’s most well known seasonal patterns called the January barometer 🌡️. Actually, the theory goes a little something like this, “as goes January, so goes the year.” In other words, if January closes with a gain, history tells us that the odds are favorable that the remainder of the year should follow suit. Now, of course, like everything in markets, nothing is guaranteed and history does not always predict the future. However, as a trained economist, I am a big believer in the power of large data sets. Meaning, the more examples we have of something occurring throughout history provides a more statistically-robust explanation of what may happen in the future. As this chart shows, the market fired out of the gate like a cannon this January, and after a healthy correction in February and March, carried forward to strong gains for the year. So right now, as I look at December's performance, I am EXCITED about the momentum the market is carrying into the new year. In fact, when we look at this next chart, December 2022 is the only instance in the past 5 years where SPY has failed to gain momentum into the New Year. Now, I am not guaranteeing that will happen again in January 2024… But I can tell you that this is certainly at the top of my mind as I get ready to release my best DAILY trading ideas for my Alpha Hunter members in the coming days-to-weeks.
