October 8, 2021 You want to just hop on Zoom? Good morning traders, Happy Friday and welcome back to The Daily Setup. Markets were up yesterday on hopes of a debt-ceiling deal. Here's what's on the docket for today: - China is back kinda - Affirm has a Target on its back - $FAMI was on the move So have a cup of coffee, read through the newsletter, and lets kill some time before we duck out early for the holiday weekend. To your success! Jeff Chart of the Day Climate change and the problem of food security in an overpopulated world have turned AgTech into a rapidly growing market right now, with farming-as-a-service and precision farming companies like [Semios]( becoming more popular and highly valued by the day. Unsurprisingly, as AgTech becomes sexier, FarmersOnly.com is taking market share from the likes of Match and Tinder. All I want for Christmas is crippling debt BIGGEST MOVER Chinese stocks, which have had the[hammer dropped on them]( in 2021, are showing signs of life after a virtual meeting between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping was announced. The meeting, which Im assuming will take place via Zoom, because both parties are too lazy to put on pants, will take place before the end of the year. - Chinese tech stocks screamed higher on the news with popular U.S. listed Chinese stocks BABA, DIDI, NIO, and IQ up between 5%-11% - An increased regulatory crackdown from the Chinese government on some of its most profitable companies has put a tremendous amount of pressure on the sector - Beijing has said to be focusing their efforts on the social good of the country, rather than profitability, and has asked tech to fall inline - Strategists from UBS speculated that topics of discussion will be trade, climate change, and Taiwan All I want for Christmas is crippling debt Shares of Affirm (AFRM) continued their hot streak on Thursday, up more than 20% on the week on news that the company [would partner with Target (TGT)]( to bring its buy now pay later technology to the retailer before the upcoming holiday season. - The partnership will allow Target customers to pay for purchases over $100 overtime in installments. This revolutionary new concept is essentially a credit card without flexibility. - Target announced the partnership in a blog post like its 2012 or something. - Customers will now have additional options to pay for whatever the hot items of Holiday 2021 turn out to be, assuming they can actually find them in stores thanks to the inevitable product shortages. BIGGEST MOVER Buy the Farmmi, or buy the farm? The past few weeks have been a roller coaster for Farmmi, Inc. (FAMI), the Chinese agricultural products supplier that specializes in edible fungi (sorry, boys, not that kind). After an [$81 million IPO]( in mid-September led to several days of losses,[short interest sextupled](. Then Redditors found out, and went full ape on the stock (read: put a short squeeze on), sending the stock briefly up to pre-IPO levels before dropping again. The stocks had minor ups and downs ever since. - Share value has climbed since FAMI published a letter to shareholders detailing new aggressive growth strategies, including the acquisition of Xiangbo, a Chinese forestry company. - Quite a few countries have placed orders from Farmmi for shiitake mushrooms and a variety of other fungi that have been in higher demand as the west has gotten on board ACTION ITEMS: - ✅ China Stocks: It’s possible that news of the virtual meeting between the U.S. and China will lead to a short-term bottom in the share price of Chinese stocks. Or, of course, all hell could break loose. - ✅ Crippling Debt: While AFRM shares have seen a massive move this week, it could be overblown because the TGT post mentions that the companies have been working together since 2019. Target is also rolling out a partnership with another buy now pay later company called Sezzle. What a slut. It remains to be seen if customers prefer the simplicity of a payment schedule to something that produces tangible value, like reward points. - ✅ Biggest Mover: FAMI’s a penny stock. It’s clear from the company’s recent history that it’s susceptible to market volatility and memestock sentiment, so you’d be tripping to stake your life savings on it. But it’s also true that the market for fungi is expanding in the west, and not just because Phish is on tour. Shots & Columbus Day Rush Other News On Wednesday, the World Health Organization endorsed Mosquirix, the worlds first malaria vaccine. In the past two years, over 2 million doses have been administered to infants in several African countries, because why shouldnt it be tested on infants? - Mosquirix was developed by GlaxoSmithKline in 1987 and has undergone more than ten years of clinical trials, which makes you wonder why the WHOs been sitting on it for so long. - Part of the issue is that Mosquirix is only 30% effective after four doses (yikes). But in Africa, where 400,000 people die from malaria every year, 30% is enough to save tens of thousands of lives. The clear efficacy of vaccinations during the coronavirus pandemic also helped convince the WHO to get behind Mosquirix. - There's another potential malaria vaccine thats still in trial stages called R21/Matrix-M, which may be up to 77% effective. Just call R21/Matrix-M Mr. Steal Your Girl. Shots, shots, shots! Pfizer (PFE) and BioNTech (BNTX) have [asked the FDA]( for emergency authorization of their Covid-19 vaccine for children aged 5-11 years old. The companies began providing trial results to the FDA in September and are hoping for authorization by Halloween (I'd rather have a needle stuck in me than having to eat candy corn or an Almond Joy). However, additional information still needs to be submitted to the FDA, which could push the authorization to some time in November. - More children have been going to the hospital than during the early parts of the pandemic due to the delta variant's spread among unvaccinated people - If authorized, children will receive 10 microgram doses versus the 30 microgram dosage given to adults. They'll learn how to handle their drugs in college. - Pfizer has said that children taking the vaccine have shown similar levels of neutralizing antibodies to those found in people ages 16-25 one month after their second dose. Beat the Columbus Day Rush Amazon (AMZN) is hoping to convince customers to [jump start their holiday shopping]( by rolling out Black Friday-worthy deals. In the first week of October. Seriously. Slow your roll Amazon, some of us are just now beginning to search for Halloween costumes for the kids. - New deals will be added daily, and discounts are expected to be available across every product category. - A new feature in Amazons shopping app allows you to ship gifts to recipients without an address, using a phone number or email address. - When someone is notified they have received a gift, they have the option to exchange it for a gift card, speeding up the process of offending their thoughtful friends and family. ACTION ITEMS: - ✅ 30% of the Time: The GAVI vaccine alliance will decide in December whether and how they’ll cough up the cash for a large-scale Mosquirix vaccination program. If they do, things will be looking 30% better for Africa and 100% better for GlaxoSmithKline. - ✅ Shots-Both PFE and BNTX have been trading in a range for the last week. This type of range-bound trade may continue until the FDA makes their decision on whether to approve the 10 microgram vaccine authorization for children. Keep in mind that PFE’s ‘rona related moves tend to be more muted as they’re a much larger, more diversified company. - ✅ Beat the Columbus Day: This could be a boon for AMZN, if shoppers buy their gifts early since they are unlikely to keep a secret for more than two months and will be forced to make additional purchases closer to the actual holiday season. Brick-and-mortar retailers could suffer from purchases shifting online, but other victims could be YouTube content creators since less store traffic means fewer opportunities to film Black Friday brawls and get them posted. Debt ceiling fixed? Buy the Rumour Stocks rallied Thursday in response to an announcement by Senate leaders that they have accepted a proposed deal that would extend the borrowing limit until early December. The legislation, which was passed by the Senate, will still need to be approved by the House of Representatives before President Joe Biden can sign it into law. The deal would raise the debt ceiling by the $480 billion threshold that Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said is needed to tide the Treasury through November. ACTION ITEMS: - ✅ Talk about kicking the can further down the road. This could be one of those scenarios where the market rallies in response to a “potential” approval and then sells off once it is signed into law. The government may face the same exact scenario in December, so it is possible we are in for volatile swings in the market over the next few months.
