[The beef 675] [I'm an image] “The Kanye-Taylor Swift episode of Kim Ks podcast is going to be must-see TV.” - Jason Hey there carnivores, Markets were steady on Thursday. Today we’re talking Spotify’s big get. Keep raging, Jeff & Jason [Image] [I'm an image] Just getting started Alexa, play “Tasty Licks” playlist on Spotify... Spotify is ready to have itself one hell of a weekend after its shares [climbed 15%]( and reached an all-time on some big-time talent news. For starters, Spotify [inked a deal]( with DC Comics to produce podcasts. You mean, like, the superheroes? Exactly. Batman is about to get the true-crime treatment. Superheroes and villains in the DC universe will be sharing their backstories in podcast form, while the company tests out new storylines (...which it can take to the silver screen) and creates original content for the platform. So it’s true, everyone does have a podcast. In addition to fictional heroes, IRL heroes will also have a chance to make some new content. Spotify closed a deal with Kim Kardashian earlier this week. Kim K’s podcast will [cover criminal-justice](... because, of course, it will. Specifically, it will revisit the case of Kevin Keith, who was convicted of three murders in 1994. Gotta spend money to make money Spotify is serious about its foray into podcasting. The streaming service has spent more than $600M buying up production studios and content over the last year. At least $100M of that went to Joe Rogan, who had previously turned Spotify down and focused his efforts on YouTube videos. But nine-figures can buy a lot of DMT and Traeger Grills. And the bet appears to be paying off. Spotify shares have gained more than 50% this year. The bottom line... Using podcasts to test movie plots is a pretty brilliant idea. DC gets to test out its stories before making them into blockbusters. Because believe it or not selling comic books doesn't exactly back up the Brinks truck. As of last year, DC was hauling in roughly $244M per film... 'Green Lantern' doesn’t count. And Spotify opens itself up to other major studios looking to test scripted content via its podcast platform. Not to mention that sweet, sweet subscription revenue that will be pouring in from anyone who's ever cosplayed. PG&E [was ordered to pay]( $4M as a result of a 2018 wildfire that it sparked which killed 84 people. It is the maximum penalty under California law. Each manslaughter charge will cost the electric company $10k, plus an additional $50k for an "unlawful" fire. Unlawful is one way to put it. Had PG&E been a sh*tty person instead of a sh*tty corporation, it would have received a prison sentence of 90 years. Interim CEO Bill Smith listened to all the victim’s accounts and said the company is working tirelessly to improve its safety…. so that next time it inevitably causes a fire it only kills like 72 people. ☑️RIP. Twenty-year-old Alex Kearns took his own life [last Friday]( after assuming that he had lost hundreds of thousands of dollars trading stocks on Robinhood. His cash balance read negative $730k due to an options trade that had yet to settle. The death highlights the potential dark side of the growing popularity of day trading. Questions have been raised about trading platforms' responsibility to protect traders from themselves. Robinhood is reviewing its options (no pun intended) to determine if any changes are appropriate. ☑️Progress. Only 1.5M people filed for unemployment last week. Imagine your reaction if you read that sentence last year. The good news is that this is the [fewest applications]( in a week since mid-March when COVID-19 starting going HAM. The bad news is that many millions of people are still out of work, and the dropoff in unemployment claims is no longer as steep as it had been in recent weeks. Roughly 20M Americans are still receiving unemployment benefits, down from a peak of 25M in May. ☑️Kaepernick signs a deal… Only it’s not with an NFL team (yet?). Kap will sign with Medium, where he will become a publisher and join the board of directors. ‘Kaepernick Publishing’ will partner with Medium to create projects focused on race and civil rights in the US. Kap [will also create content]( for the site. The deal makes sense for both sides... Medium will likely get more eyeballs and Colin will get access to Medium's 170M monthly readers.
