âThe good news about unemployment report days? Markets always go up...â - Jeff
Hey there carnivores,
Markets were up on Thursday.
And today weâre talking about another wave of jobless claims.
Keep raging,
Jeff & Jason

Still bad
Cue the "[unprecedented times](" commercial...
Another [3M people]( filed for unemployment benefits this week, similar to last week, bringing the grand total of claims to 36.5M over the past eight weeks. The good news? That number has been decreasing week over week since 7M claims were filed at the end of March.
Markets opened down on the news but were able to rally throughout the day with all three major indices ending positive. Silver lining?
At least weâre in it together...
Not quite. Low-income employees and women have been hit the hardest. 39% of [people making less than $40k]( were either furloughed or permanently laid off, compared to just 19% of people making between $40k and $100k.
California appears to be the worst off, as far as claims go, but anybody who's ever driven past Skid Row knows that already. Gov Newsom said Caliâs unemployment rate [could reach as high as 24.5%]( before it starts to decline again. Not if Elon has anything to say about it...
The bottom line...
Itâs safe to say weâre all tired of these mind-boggling unemployment numbers, and it appears that the people processing them are too. Turns out the latest numbers had [a few quirks]( in them. Connecticut reported roughly 298k unemployed, or 10 times the amount from a week prior thanks to a data entry error. Dammit Karen, always with the fat fingers!
But look, itâs not her fault. States have been suffering budget cuts of their own and repurposing staff to the unemployment department. It might just be me, but I donât think more detail in the unemployment numbers is going to put people back into the workforce...

âï¸Put out to pasture. Delta is taking its Boeing 777 out behind the shed with Pawpawâs old musket. The company said that due to the coronavirus outlook, it doesnât see long international travel for fun returning anytime soon, and therefore would be [retiring]( its 777 fleet. Geez, that must have been a grim outlook.
As a result, Delta will now be overstaffed by 7k pilots, or almost half of its fleet. Sounds like there are about to be 7k more unemployment applications.
Investors donât seem to be worried, and have faith that Delta has a plan, as its shares only fell 0.2% on the news.
âï¸No cap. OK, maybe a little cap, especially if youâre a retailer that delivers via FedEx. The global shipping company responsible for Tom Hanksâ long, island vacation in the movie âCastawayâ announced that it would be [placing limits]( on how much inventory retailers can ship from certain geographic locations.
The move comes as FedEx finds itself in a pinch with everybody shopping at home. Kohlâs, Abercrombie & Fitch, and two dozen other retailers will be affected by FedExâs new rule. You think the people who dig through the clearance rack at Kohlâs are afraid of a little virus?
âï¸Privacy Update. House and Senate Democrats introduced a bill [regarding]( privacy for health data in the age of coronavirus. The bill looks to protect user data from digital contact tracing technology that Apple and Google are building into iPhones. You know, that thing theyâre definitely already doing, but now in the name of health.
Basically, the bill gives Americans the right to opt-in, rather than just being stalked digitally by Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai without their knowledge.
