[The new Beatles release](%2F%2Fqz.com%2Fnew-beatles-song-now-and-then-ai-john-lennon-1850981701%2F%3Futm_source=email%26utm_medium=Quartz_Daily_Brief_US%26utm_content=1850991706/1/0100018b99c7a600-9bd20bf3-9420-4b24-9cde-a88d748854ee-000000/h18yQ0wpqYT6SSPrXnVvvmlHVn8_nlidnT3MrgrmZ8A=325) may not be their best song everâ[feel free to tell us your favorite](mailto:talk@qz.com?cc=&subject=Fave%20Fab%20Four%20song%20&body=)âbut it is something new, and thatâs pretty fun. In the 50 years since the Fab Four were no more, Paul McCartney has managed to squeeze out three official new songs. âReal Loveâ and âFree as a Birdâ were released in 1995 and 1996 as part of The Beatles Anthology multimedia project. Like âNow and Then,â those two songs lifted John Lennonâs vocals from one-track demos he recorded before his death in 1980. Unlike âNow and Then,â the producers didnât have AI to separate John Lennonâs voice from the instruments beneath it. Pull up your favorite streaming service and compare the 1990s technology on âReal Loveâ and âFree as a Birdâ with 2023âs âNow and Then.â Johnâs voice is markedly clearer on the new track. Extra credit: AI also helped Peter Jackson lift out the Beatlesâ individual voices from the background noise in the 2021 documentary Get Back, which [weâve previously written about](%2F%2Fqz.com%2Femails%2Fquartz-at-work%2F2104247%2Fhow-the-beatles-became-a-self-managing-team/1/0100018b99c7a600-9bd20bf3-9420-4b24-9cde-a88d748854ee-000000/5XrP7WgtwqWmGHOzC-J0yi9pDW2dMA6Ks4JBCMJuc1U=325) as a perfect ode to collaborative work. But while AI could clean up Johnâs voice for âNow and Then,â and Paul, Ringo, and even the late George Harrison make appearances, the critics are in agreementâit just doesnât compare to the four of them putting their heads together and coming up with something sublime. OpenAIâs dominance is being tested Sure, OpenAIâs latest version of its large language model, GPT-4, rules the large-language model (LLM) space. But that doesnât mean other companies arenât trying to knock it off the throne. Big Tech companies like Meta and Google and upstarts like Anthropic, Stability AI, and Mosaic are offering their version of LLMs, which helps power AI chatbots. In response, companies working on generative AI applications are using multiple LLM providers in part to hedge their bets in case an OpenAI competitor takes off. âWhat we find is that there is not a single model that works well for every single scenario,â Anurag Dhingra, Ciscoâs chief technology officer, told Quartz. The strategy comes down to an old adage, revised: Donât put all your eggs in [one big olâ AI basket](%2F%2Fqz.com%2Fwhy-companies-investing-in-generative-ai-want-openai-al-1850965335%2F%3Futm_source=email%26utm_medium=Quartz_Daily_Brief_US%26utm_content=1850991706/1/0100018b99c7a600-9bd20bf3-9420-4b24-9cde-a88d748854ee-000000/zXBxmtoTy3VGsHcMNOBq4EtsTQxM7cCw1edDVLgW3mo=325). AI has the power to automate, but if it's using untrusted data, can you trust the results? With watsonx, you can train AI with your data to help you make informed decisions for your business. At first blush, the sheer number of options and combinations of options seems overwhelmingâbut once you start looking around, use cases present themselves. For instance, say your boss asks you to turn a long, complicated presentation into an internal blog post. Voila, Magic Switch can do that for you. We wouldnât recommend publishing the results without a thoroughly human editâand Canva puts up a warning that you shouldnât do this eitherâbut itâs a starting point. We used Magic Design to create a presentation for us with the prompt âA pitch for an email written by AI instead of humans.â It gave us several presentations to choose from, with text and images ready to go. Of course we were unable to resist the one that began with a slide that included a skull. If youâre going to lead a presentation about replacing humans with a picture of a human skull, you need to provide some sparkling proseâbut Canvaâs first pass only produced (very) stilted language. So we clicked over to its Magic Write feature, available to Pro users, and asked it to âsprinkle fairy dustâ on our slides. It took a few tries before we finally saw some skull-worthy results. Hereâs the first slide, with its first attempt, followed by the fairy dust result: %2F%2Fqz.com%2Femails%2Fdaily-brief%2F1850991706%2Fai-in-focus-the-beatles-little-help-from-ai%2F/4/0100018b99c7a600-9bd20bf3-9420-4b24-9cde-a88d748854ee-000000/SiKE4eviySVTKO2e96_8QYGg4WyMtax8nGfK0uBfC7E=325 Screenshot: (Quartz) And hereâs the second slideâs before and after: %2F%2Fqz.com%2Femails%2Fdaily-brief%2F1850991706%2Fai-in-focus-the-beatles-little-help-from-ai%2F/5/0100018b99c7a600-9bd20bf3-9420-4b24-9cde-a88d748854ee-000000/5dJPW0HUFygPpIt_D1dSK48OA49KUkjfl8ni0XJJkX0=325 Screenshot: (Quartz) As humans who write emails, we werenât unconvinced to let AI take our jobs.
