Yet over the past 15 years, drag has become more popular, better understood, and more visible than perhaps ever before. One reality competition show is largely responsible for bringing performers out of nightclubs and into the living rooms of millions of people across the globe. We’re talking, of course, about RuPaul’s Drag Race. Following the success of his hit song “Supermodel (You Better Work)” in 1993, drag superstar RuPaul Charles set off to make a name for himself as a radio and television host before finally agreeing to create a show, with co-founders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, that would honor drag performers.
