From one dirty job to another Sure, the number of Americans leaving dirty jobs for green ones is rising rapidly (increasing tenfold between 2005 and 2021). And sure, electric vehicles are driving that transition. But the number is still alarmingly small. Fewer than 1% of all workers who leave a job in a carbon-intensive industryâthink coal, mining, oil, and natural gasâappear to transition to a low-carbon industry jobâsolar, wind, or EV production. Meanwhile, the climate continues, rapidly, to warm. A couple of factors, including the Inflation Reduction Act and its new clean energy products, will make these numbers change in the future, though, [Michelle Cheng reports](%2F%2Fqz.com%2Fless-than-1-of-americans-in-dirty-energy-jobs-have-tra-1850735564%2F%3Futm_source=email%26utm_medium=Quartz_Daily_Brief_US%26utm_content=1850742282/1/01000189fdcb523d-caa8167b-801e-41b3-b9f3-e6022213bd59-000000/s-6u3sgLfGs_OptC9K9iaRg1WzL9ZCGGHeuCDEUSleU=314). And now, to get those workers to take some time off⦠Nearly half of US workers who receive paid time offâthat includes vacation time, but also time off for appointments, sick days, or even mental health breaksâdonât use it all.
