People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.â 1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV) If youâve been a Christian for long or visited a church a few times, youâve probably heard about a âquiet time.â Itâs a time that you set aside every day to spend time with Godâand itâs essential if you want to grow as a Christian. There are different ways you can go about having a quiet time, but the most important thing is that you start with the right attitude. In Godâs eyes, why you do something is far more important than what you do. Itâs possible to do the right thing but with the wrong attitude! God told Samuel, âThe LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heartâ (1 Samuel 16:7 NIV). When you come to meet with God in a quiet time, you should have these attitudes: Expectancy. When you meet with God, it should be with eager anticipation, like you might have when you meet with a close friend. Expect that youâre going to have good fellowship and that youâll receive a blessing from your time together. That was what David expected: âO God, you are my God; earnestly I seek youâ (Psalm 63:1 ESV). Reverence. Donât rush into Godâs presence. Instead, prepare your heart by being still before him as you begin your time together. The prophet Habakkuk said, âThe LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before himâ (Habakkuk 2:20 NIV). Starting with quiet reverence helps clear away any thoughts that might be distracting you. Alertness. Donât start your time with God sleepy and exhausted. Instead, get wide-awake first. The best preparation for a morning quiet time begins the night before. Go to bed early so youâre rested and alert and ready to meet God in the morning. He deserves your full attention! Willingness to obey. You come to a quiet time expecting to hear from God, and you should decide beforehand that youâre going to obey what he says. Jesus says, âAnyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my ownâ (John 7:17 NIV). Come to meet God having already chosen to do his willâno matter what. Come to your quiet time with expectancy, reverence, alertness, and a willingness to obey. And get ready to see God work through your time together! [PLAY todayâs audio teaching from Pastor Rick >>]( Talk It Over - Which do you usually spend more time thinking aboutâthe âwhyâ of your quiet times or the âwhatâ?
- How have you seen God work through your quiet times when you come prepared with the right attitudes?
- In what area do you need to grow mostâyour expectancy, reverence, alertness, or willingness to obey? What step will you take today to grow in that area? Are you ready to find peace with God? The first step toward rest is to make peace with God by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior. You can start by praying this simple prayer: âDear God, I donât want my sin to separate me from you any longer. You have promised that if I believe in Jesus, youâll forgive me for everything Iâve ever done wrong, youâll show me the purpose of my life, and youâll accept me into your family and bring me to heaven one day to live with you for eternity. âJesus, I confess my sin, and I believe you are my Savior. I trust you when you say salvation comes by grace, through faith, and not by anything I do. I ask you to come into my life as my Lord. Today, I commit my life to you. âI want to live the way you created me to liveâat peace and restedâand to use the remainder of my life to serve you. In Jesusâ name I pray. Amen.â If you just prayed to accept Jesus, please email me at Rick@PastorRick.com and let me know about it. Iâd like to send you some free materials to help you start your journey with Jesus.
