You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.â Philippians 2:4-5 (NLT) When you meet someone to resolve a conflict, you first have to confess your part of the problem. Then you need to listen for the other personâs hurt and perspective. In every conflictâfrom our personal relationships to politicsâwe think we argue over ideas. But we actually argue over emotion. Anytime thereâs a conflict, someoneâs feelings were hurt; somebody felt abused or slighted. Itâs not the idea that causes the conflict. Itâs the emotion behind the idea. Hurt people hurt people. The more someone is experiencing hurt, the more likely they are to lash out at everyone else. People who arenât experiencing hurt donât hurt others. People who are filled with love are loving toward others. People who are filled with joy are joyful toward others. People who are filled with peace are at peace with everybody else. But people who are filled with hurt are going to hurt others. Theyâre going to lash out. If you want to connect with people, you must start with their hurts, their needs, and their interests. If you want to be a good salesperson, you donât start with your product. You start with your customerâs hurts, needs, and interests. If you want to be a good professor or pastor or anything else, you start with peopleâs needs, hurts, and interests. Philippians 2:4-5 says, âDonât look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus hadâ (NLT). In times of conflict, are you often so busy trying to get others to see your position that you donât listen to theirs? When each person is just speaking and not listening, you move further and further away from each other emotionally. Instead, you need to intentionally switch your focus from your needs to their needs. Conflict resolution starts with the way you look at the situation. The word âlookâ in Philippians 2:4 is the Greek word scopos. Itâs where we get our words âmicroscopeâ and âtelescope.â Scopos means âto focus.â The passage goes on to say that you should have the same attitude Jesus had. And you are most like Jesus when youâre focusing on the hurts of somebody else rather than your own. Thereâs an old proverb that says, âSeek to understand before seeking to be understood.â When youâre focused on the other personâs needs and not your own, youâll be able to get a better understanding of the situation and move forward with resolving your conflict. [PLAY todayâs audio teaching from Pastor Rick >>]( Talk It Over - How does Jesusâ life show you how to look out for othersâ interests?
- What are some ways that you can practice showing concern for othersâ needs, even when youâre not in the middle of a conflict?
- How do you need to prepare yourself before you go into conflict resolution so that you are prepared to listen and focus on the other person? Where will you spend eternity? The Bible says you can only get to heaven by trusting in God through his Son, Jesus Christ. You cannot earn your way into heaven: âIt is by grace you have been saved, through faithâand this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godânot by works, so that no one can boastâ (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV). If youâre ready to commit your life to Jesus, start with this prayer: âDear God, you have promised that if I believe in your Son, Jesus Christ, everything Iâve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day. "I confess I have sinned, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died to take away my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow him as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesusâ name I pray. Amen."
