The book of Ecclesiastes is all about one manâs mid-life crisis. Solomonâs deep soul-searching is refreshingly honest . . . and reveals something you and I canât afford to miss. In the worldâs eyes, Solomon had it all. He was well educated and enjoyed fame, power, and status. He was extremely rich and partied hard. But despite his success according to every worldly standard, deep down he found himself empty and dissatisfied. His conclusion was pretty bleak . . . "As I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaninglessâlike chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere" (Ecclesiastes 2:11 NLT).
Solomonâs problem was that his hunger was spiritualâand could therefore never be filled with popularity, or possessions, power, or prestige. {NAME}, God has given you and me the same spiritual hungerâone that canât be satisfied by a job, hobbies, achievements, fame, friends, or even family. And Jesus tells us thatâs a good thing. In his Sermon on the Mount, he says: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled" (Matthew 5:6 NIV).
Jesus is saying that in order to live a fulfilled life, youâve got to hunger and thirst for the right thingâand keep on hungering for it! The trouble is, itâs easy for our spiritual appetite to fade. So how can you keep yourself hungry for the spiritual nourishment God offers? Here are three ways: First, remind yourself of how much God loves you. Itâs easy to get hungry when you see a feast. And thatâs what happens when you grasp just how much God loves you! Pray Ephesians 3, asking God to give you the "power to understand . . . how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is . . . Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God" (Ephesians 3:18-19 NLT). When you understand how much God loves you, you canât help but love him back! Second, stop filling up on spiritual junk food. Only one thing can truly satisfy your spiritual hunger, so donât settle for substitutes. If youâre not hungry for God, itâs because youâre filling up on other things like power, possessions, or prestige. Remember the words of Isaiah 55:2 . . . "Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good and you will delight in the richest of fare" (NIV).
Third, get into Godâs Word every day. Eating a meal once a week wonât cut it; you need daily food. Likewise, your soul needs daily nourishment! As 1 Peter 2:2 says, "Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation" (NLT).
