Let me share with you some of the lessons I’ve learned on burnout. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ [Pastor Rick's Daily Hope]( ) {NAME} , In the first year of Saddleback Church, I was a 25-year-old pastor with no staff. I set up and took down the chairs. I printed the bulletins. I did all the preaching, teaching, and praying. When it came to that ministry, I did it all. And I was exhausted. One Sunday morning, it caught up to me—I stood up to speak, and I fainted. God taught me a valuable lesson during that difficult season: The key to an effective life is focus. And the focus of a stress-free life is Jesus. In The Message, 2 Corinthians 5:14 says, "[Christ’s] love has the first and last word in everything we do. Our firm decision is to work from this focused center." My problems as a young pastor started when my focus shifted from God to my work for God. My work was a good thing—but it wasn’t the best thing. And the antidote to my burnout was re-centering my life on Jesus. And if you want to lower your stress and live out your purpose effectively, you need to make sure God is at the center. Once I started spending more time with God, I began to be re-energized, renewed, refreshed, and revitalized. I worried less, worshipped more, and became a living example of Philippians 4:7 (The Message): "It's wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life!" You see, one of the ways that you know Jesus is at the center of your life is you worry less. Worry is a sign that something has replaced him. It’s easy to center life around your career, relationships, hobbies, sports, or just plain fun. And there’s nothing wrong with those things—but they’re just not strong enough, solid enough, or secure enough to be the center of your life. I learned firsthand that putting Jesus there is the number one stress reliever in life. [That’s why I took the lessons God taught me during that difficult season, and I put them together to create the Re-Energize Your Life Bible study.]( ) [Re-Engergize Your Life!]( ) This study is a practical, hands-on tool that will take you on a journey from fatigue to fulfillment. I use it as a devotional, and it has become one of the first things I do in my routine every day. It has changed my spiritual life! Every day when I get up one of my first thoughts is: what will I receive from God today from the podcast?"
