Are you always looking for a fight? Does your defense mechanism kick in during every other conversation? The Bible says that, if you are wise, you wonât antagonize someoneâs anger: âReal wisdom, Godâs wisdom, begins with a holy life and is characterized by getting along with othersâ (James 3:17 The Message). Wise people work at maintaining peace and harmony. They’re not carrying a chip on their shoulders. They donât take offense easily, and they donât say and do things that they know will stir other peopleâs anger. âAny fool can start arguments; the honorable thing is to stay out of themâ (Proverbs 20:3 GNT). Being wise in your relationships means avoiding arguments. There is a long list of things that cause arguments. Here are three specific things you can avoid as you try to honor people and build more peaceful and loving relationships. Donât compare. Comparing causes arguments because it shows that youâre not satisfied and content with what you have and who God has made you to be. When you are content with your life, it will show in your healthy relationships. Donât condemn. Itâs no surprise that using condemning statements like, âIt’s all your faultâ or âYou should be ashamed of yourselfâ leads to arguments. Or maybe it comes out in phrases like, âYou ought to,â âYou shouldn’t,â âYou always,â and âYou never.â Using phrases like these and condemning people puts you above them. That is not the way of Jesus. Don’t contradict. When you’re in the middle of an argument, don’t sweat the small stuff. If somebody gets a detail wrong, just let it go. William James, a famous psychologist, said, âWisdom is the art of knowing what to overlook.â If you can learn to let things go, then you will notice how much more peaceful your relationships are. Comparison, condemnation, and contradiction always lead to arguments. But when you choose instead to show grace, God can transform your relationships.
