[Pamela Pugh for Congress]( {NAME}, I hope you are enjoying the holiday. I wanted to share a few thoughts with you today on the major Supreme Court ruling that came down this week. This is a tenuous time for our country and our democracy. Effectively, the Supreme Court declared the president “a king above the law” — the very thing the American Revolution fought to topple when they ratified the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The irony is not lost on those of us who know our country’s history. But there’s also an irony embedded deep in the ideals of our country’s founders that I think about on July 4th – the idea of freedom that inspired those who weren’t included in the definition by the people who first wrote it down. And, as Nickole Hannah-Jones has written, “Our democracy’s founding ideals were false when they were written. Black Americans have fought to make them true.” Today, I celebrate those Americans who fought to make this idea of freedom true. The ones fighting now beside me every day as I campaign for Congress in an open, toss-up district here in Mid-Michigan. I hope I can live up to their mantle, their example, and their expression, particularly in this perilous time for our democracy. So today, I hope you all enjoy a break from work, good food, and celebrate with friends and family. I know I am going to enjoy spending time in my community sharing our plan to make this country a more dignified and equitable place, where people are free to make their own choices about their bodies and lives. Just like our founding document declared so long ago as our unalienable rights. – Dr. Pamela Pugh [DONATE]( --------------------------------------------------------------- I’m Dr. Pamela Pugh, and I’m a Saginaw native running for Congress in Michigan's 8th District. I've spent my career fighting to improve the lives of Michigan residents through public health initiatives, and as the Chief Public Health Advisor for Flint I played a pivotal role in standing alongside Flint residents during the water crisis. As a public servant, I currently serve as the President of the Michigan State Board of Education, a statewide elected position. I believe in standing up for the people and fighting for our democracy, our children, and our future. I've lived in Michigan's 8th District for my entire life and it will be the honor of a lifetime to represent my community in the House of Representatives. I'm relying on grassroots contributions to fuel my campaign to victory — [so please chip in what you can right now!]( Our email list is an important tool for us to reach Democrats and activists in Michigan and around the country.
