Baltimore Bridge Collapse Sends Shockwaves Through US Later Tuesday, Biden [addressed the crisis]( saying Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg was on the scene and that the federal government would allocate all the resources needed to remove debris from the critical port river and rebuild the bridge. "I spoke with Democratic Maryland Gov. [Wes] Moore this morning as well as Mayor of Baltimore and county executive, two both United States senators and the congressman. And my Secretary of Transportation is on the scene," Biden said. "I told them we are going to spend all the federal resources they need as we respond to this emergency. I mean all the federal resources." "It is my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort," the president went on to say. The collapse might also trigger serious long-term consequences with the U.S. economy and American shipping. The Port of Baltimore [handled]( about 20% of all American coal exports in 2022, making it the second-largest coal exporting location in the U.S. behind the Port of Norfolk, Virginia. The port [also saw]( 52 million tons of cargo worth about $80 billion come in from foreign exporters in 2022. “This is a major disaster and will create significant problems on the U.S. East Coast for U.S. importers and exporters," Lars Jensen, CEO of Vespucci Maritime, wrote in a [post]( on LinkedIn. “The bridge collapse will mean that for the time being it will not be possible to get to the container terminals – or a range of the other port terminals — in Baltimore. … Additionally this means the cargo already gated into the Baltimore terminals would have to either wait an unknown period for the sealane to reopen, or be gated back out and shifted to a different port.” "It appears the Norfolk and [New York and New Jersey] combined does have sufficient capacity to take the spill-over from Baltimore," Jensen added. "Of course not without some disruptive effects as none of this is pre-planned into the supply chains and hence some bottleneck effects and delays are to be anticipated in the short term. For Baltimore and immediate surrounding (areas) the impact on supply chains will of course be extremely large." The closure of the bridge and the consequent blockage of the Port of Baltimore "will inevitably disrupt commercial activities and supply chains," the Maryland Chamber of Commerce explained in a [statement]( addressing the bridge collapse. "Understanding the monumental task ahead to recover from this tragedy and restore this vital transportation link, we urge all residents and businesses to exercise patience and make the necessary long-term adjustments to their daily routines, travel and operations." HOT OFF THE PRESS Don Scores Win: On Monday, former president Donald Trump [notched]( a big legal victory after an appeals court agreed to reduce his civil fraud case bond while he appeals the ruling. Trump said he would pay the new required amount, $175 million, compared to the previous figure, $454 million. RFK Picks Running Mate: After flirting with a potential Aaron Rodgers and wrestler Jesse Ventura VP pick, independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. [announced]( Tuesday that Silicon Valley lawyer Nicole Shanahan would be his 2024 running mate. Several conservative pundits have pointed out that by picking a disaffected California liberal such as Shanahan, RFK will more likely peel off voters from Biden's electorate than Trump's, thus boosting the latter. MAGA Tidal Wave? [In a new enterprise report]( from the Daily Caller's Reagan Reese, our White House correspondent breaks down the 2024 election polls showing Trump's lead over President Joe Biden: Republicans have a not-so-secret weapon going into the 2024 election for the first time of the Trump era: a presidential nominee running circles around his opponent in the polls. At the top of March, Trump [posted]( his largest lead over Biden to date in either a New York Time/Siena or New York Times/CBS poll. He continues to trounce Biden in hypothetical matchups across most swing states. The 81-year-old president battles a low [approval]( rating and growing concerns about his age. All signs point to a major opportunity for Republicans, and GOP strategists told the Daily Caller the road could lead to a long-anticipated red wave in November. “I think that's absolutely true that his low job approval is helping the Republicans, it's no question about it. And in fact, more than that, his low job approval is causing Americans to look back on the Trump presidency with some nostalgia," a longtime GOP adviser in Kentucky and veteran of numerous campaigns, Scott Jennings, told the Daily Caller. Though Jennings said Republicans are certainly benefitting from Biden's low approval rating, he added that he thought it was too early to confidently predict a red wave. "But the conditions are right. I guess it's the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning. Tornado warning means a tornado has been spotted," Jennings said. "A tornado watch is the conditions are right. And I think the conditions are right. So I'd say that'd put us in watch territory." TRENDING What's your take on this? The network hired McDaniel, the former RNC chairwoman, as a contributor. Hosts complained that McDaniel was too in the bag for Donald Trump and accused her of spreading lies about the 2020 election. McDaniel is now reportedly exploring legal options. Welker's Woes: To make matters worse for NBC, "Meet the Press" host Kristen Welker allegedly "misled" her audience about her knowledge of McDaniel's hiring, [according]( to a report from Politico. Welker claimed she was not involved in the hiring decision, however a source close to McDaniel said Welker's words are "misleading," and handed Politico text messages indicating that Welker and Carrie Budoff Brown met with McDaniel in mid-February right after Brown reached out to McDaniel about the possibility of being a paid contributor.
