[@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing. For nearly a century pieces of Rhode Island's history were kept in a home along Mount Hope Bay in Bristol. The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology housed Native American remains and artifacts tied to Rhode Island and grew to include Indigenous artifacts from around the country as Rudolf F. Haffenreffer Jr. traveled around the turn of the century to add to his collection. He later began inviting people to his home to show off his purchases and later the property and collection were donated to Brown University. The university, however, stopped offering tours in 2008 amid concerns about the condition of the building. [Haffenreffer historic] Rudolf F. Haffenreffer Jr. opened his collection for The Providence Journal to photograph and write about, as seen in this article from Oct. 11, 1931. Providence Journal File With the building closed, what is to become of the collection? The Journal's Antonia Farzan recently talked with the director of the Haffenreffer Museum and learned that it's not quite as easy as just setting up display cases in a new building. Sure, there are plans to reopen the museum in Providence's Jewelry District, but what the museum will look like is sure to change. Antonia explores what's to come of the museum and why the changes are necessary. Part of that process also involves returning items to Native American tribes. The Providence Journal is chronicling the history of Rhode Island every day.
