[@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing. Is the Federal government on the verge of a shutdown? While there's been plenty of talk about a shutdown in recent weeks, it seems that's been mostly all that's happened – talk. And now we're less than a week away from a deadline for Democrats and Republicans to reach a budget agreement and keep the government funded. And it may feel like shutdown talk is like a form of deja vu. We hear about on national news, there are threats and then mostly an agreement is reached. But that's not always the case and this could be that year. [Afp Afp 9tu74r Jpg A Pol Usa Dc] As the country inches closer to the Sept. 30, 2023, deadline to fund the government, the only path forward to avert a shutdown is to pass a short-term funding measure to buy lawmakers more time to negotiate a longer-term deal. The Journal's Katherine Gregg talked with those in state government to find out more how they're preparing. She also checked in with some federal offices here in the state and asked Congressman Seth Magaziner about his concerns for a shutdown. Here's a sample of what Magaziner had to say: "A government shutdown would have devastating consequences for Rhode Islanders. Rhode Islanders working for the federal government, including active duty military servicemembers, air traffic controllers, and TSA officers would be forced to work without pay."
