[@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing. The Washington County Fair may not have the hype that large state fairs in places like Iowa and Texas receive, but that's no reason to not make the trip down to Richmond this weekend. As a Washington County native, the fair is an annual summer tradition for my family. The kids enjoy the rides, we all have our favorite foods – mine is the corn dogs and hand cut french fries – and just walking through the fairgrounds will make for a couple hours of fun. [Washington County Fair 2023 11] There were already plenty of visitors at the Washington County Fair on opening day 2023. David Delpoio A trip through the animal exhibits is always a must. And while the mother and baby piglets garner the awes due to their cuteness, the walk through the show chickens offers a fun view of breeds that go far beyond what you'd see in an egg commercial. While I've walked through the chicken exhibit plenty of times over the years, turns out I haven't known all that much about them. Until now. The Journal's Katie Landeck met up with a couple of people raising show chickens that are on display at the fair this week. It turns out there's a lot that goes into show chickens, enough so that there's a 300-plus page reference book and that's just for one class of chicken. And that's not all. [To find out more about what it takes to raise show chickens and who is doing it, check out Katie's story.]( • A correction from yesterday's newsletter.
