[@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing. If you live in Connecticut and are curious about how safe a road or intersection is the answer lies a couple of clicks away. It's a handy system the state's Department of Transportation has created in partnership with the University of Connecticut. Connecticut is not alone in making such information readily available to the public. But if you want that kind of information in Rhode Island, well, good luck. Don't expect the R.I. Department of Transportation to provide it, even with a public records request. [2 12 2023 Fatal Crash 2 1 Of 1x] Two people died in a crash on Feb. 12, 2023, after the car they were in crashed into the barrier at Pine Street and East Franklin Street in downtown Providence. Scorch marks were visible after police cleared the scene. Wheeler Cowperthwaite/The Providence Journal That's what Jamie Pahigian found out, as The Journal's Amy Russo reports, as he made what seems like a reasonably simple request from the R.I. Department of Transportation seeking 15 years of crash data related to Providence streets. Pahigian, a member of the Providence Streets Coalition, was seeking the information to build a crash map showing where danger zones exist to help guide safety improvements. Why wouldn't RIDOT make such information available? [Amy has the full story, plus how Pahigian got ahold of the information anywhere.]( Today is my son Max's 12th birthday. In his honor share this email with 12 people. Don't worry nothing bad will happen to you if you don't, but it would be nice.
