[@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing. You can tell we're making the final turn into summer because beaches have been a hot topic lately. Yesterday I highlighted the story about [Narragansett's plans to create parking restrictions near Narragansett Beach]( and while that's unfortunate for beachgoers, today we have a much more serious topic to discuss – rip currents. The presence of rip currents can turn what should be a fun day at the beach into a nightmare and just in Rhode Island there have been four deaths in the past three years. They also tend to be the most common reason for lifeguards to make saves, especially at Scarborough and East Matunuck state beaches. With this in mind, The Journal's Jack Perry recently caught up with lifeguards, surfers and scientists to talk about the dangers of rip currents and how swimmers can prepare. [Riptide 2] Lifeguard Andy Lavallee at Scarborough beach. David DelPoio Fortunately, many of the state's lead lifeguards have the experience to spot them early. Advances in forecasting have also helped to provide advance notice of when they may form. This is all good news, but doesn't fully remove the risk, so Jack has tips on what to do if you're caught in a rip current.
