The Journal's Jack Perry recently wrote about [Stanley Tree Service delivering a check for $1,347]( to the Smithfield School Department to cover the unpaid balances of 204 children from 175 families. That's just one small example. Of course, the issue of school debt wasn't prominent in recent years as federal funds allowed school districts to offer free meals to everyone during the COVID-19 years. With those funds no longer available, stories such as that in Smithfield are back in the news. But that could all change.
