The hatchery will operate as a partnership between Raso's Matunuck Oyster Farm and the University of Rhode Island, thanks to $1.3 million federal earmark secured by U.S. Sen. Jack Reed to cover some of the costs of the project. The hatchery already has the approvals necessary to proceed with construction and should be producing oyster seed within a year.
