[Read in browser]( [Read in browser]( The Daily Briefing YOUR MORNING NEWS ROUNDUP Wed Jan 18 2023 Will Richmond | Managing Editor Communities & R.I. [@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing. Gov. Dan McKee gave his first State of the State as the elected governor last night, and as [Providence Journal State House reporters Katherine Gregg and Patrick Anderson wrote]( he "named housing affordability, better schools and tax relief as the cornerstones of his agenda for addressing some of the biggest problems bedeviling Rhode Islanders – along with potholes." Of course, we're talking about politics, so there were those who offered their support and those that didn't exactly agree with what McKee had to say. As is tradition, McKee's speech was followed by [a response by the state's Republican Party]( with this year's version coming from Senate Republican leader Jessica de la Cruz. [07 Mckee 01172023] RI Governor Dan McKee waves to some of his invited guest as he delivers his state of the state address in the House chambers on Jan 17, 2023. Kris Craig, The Providence Journal Beyond the formal response, social media gave others an outlet, while inboxes filled with statements. Here's a look at what people were saying. General Treasurer James Diossa via press release “Tonight our state heard a powerful message from Governor McKee on his plans for the success of all Rhode Islanders. In recent months, families from Woonsocket to Westerly have struggled to make ends meet due to inflationary pressures. We know there is work to be done, and the Governor’s proposed tax relief plan is a key step in ensuring that no Rhode Islander will have to choose between putting food on the table or paying the bills. I look forward to working with Governor McKee so that we can build a better Rhode Island – one that is healthier, has improved education outcomes for our students, and is a more competitive place to do business.” Congressman Seth Magaziner via Twitter "It was a pleasure to attend [@GovDanMcKee]( State of the State address, focused on expanding access to housing and high quality education. I look forward to partnering with state leaders to deliver on these and other priorities for Rhode Islanders." R.I. GOP Chairwoman Sue Cienki via Twitter "Lack of applause for the Governor’s more meaningful ideas suggest the left leaning General Assembly seem unmoved." Republican state Rep. Brian Newberry via Twitter "Much of what [@GovDanMcKee]( is talking about tonight sounds like traditional moderate to conservative Democrat priorities, things Republicans might disagree on details about but could support conceptually. But an ever leftward moving General Assembly audience seems uninterested." WORTH A READ • Which counties have had the most disaster declarations in the U.S. and where do Rhode Island counties rank?
