Good afternoon and welcome to This Just In. I'm Mike McDermott, managing editor of The Providence Journal. It's Thursday afternoon; when next I write this newsletter, [we'll all be freezing]( Seniors in Rhode Island have received the news that many of them have been waiting for: the state [plans to begin vaccinating people 75 and older next week]( and those 65 and older later in February. But a news conference at Veterans Memorial Auditorium left many unanswered questions, chief among them: when will people be able to make appointments? In Warwick, the answer was 2 o'clock this afternoon, but [all available appointments were gone in 30 minutes]( Health Director Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott also told restaurants that [the state is lifting its 10 p.m. curfew]( (10:30 on weekends) starting Sunday, citing encouraging trends in the state's virus caseload. [The latest numbers]( nine more coronavirus deaths, 745 additional cases, and a daily test positivity rate of 3.3%. A former chaplain with the Boy Scouts of America admitted to awful crimes against six young victims in a hearing this morning in Superior Court, Wakefield. James Glawson [was sentenced to 60 years in prison]( with 40 to serve, on 11 counts of first-degree sexual assault. The Rhode Island Convention Center Authority has selected the deputy director of the state Department of Administration, Daniel McConaughy, [as its $184,000-a-year executive director](. McConaughy replaces James McCarvill , who died last year. The authority, a quasi-public agency, did not announce a search for McCarvill's replacement before selecting McConaughy at the suggestion of the governor's office. [A trial date has been set]( for Sgt. Joseph Hanley, the Providence police officer accused of assaulting a handcuffed man last year, and the list of potential witnesses includes many of the highest-ranking officers in the department. The state public-employees pension fund [reached an all-time]( high in assets last year, according to the state treasurer's office, and it's not because it [invested in GameStop]( Gene Cardono, an advertising executive who created the Big Blue Bug and once owned minor-league baseball's Pawtucket Indians, [has died at 88](. Finally, say a prayer tonight for A.J. Quetta, a young hockey player from North Providence [who suffered a traumatic injury]( on the ice this week. Have a great night.
