DNA evidence points to R.I. man in brutal 1979 murder - not Taunton brothers who spent decades in prison for it. DAILY NEWSLETTER [Providence Journal]( 1 Jun, 2019 [Facebook]( [Twitter]( [Instagram]( [SUBSCRIBE FOR ALL ACCESS]( Today's Top Stories: [U.S. tornado season’s roaring start is a reminder: R.I.’s not immune]( Southern New England typically gets one to three tornadoes a year, and they're usually weaker storms, but every decade or so, a stronger storm hits the region. Folks in one Lincoln neighborhood are still putting the pieces back together from a twister that hit last October - and missing some big trees, too. [Lawyers: DNA evidence points to R.I. man in brutal 1979 murder]( WORCESTER - The savage murder and rape of 75-year-old Concetta Schiappa in September 1979 went unsolved for more than a year before investigators fixed their sights on her two great nephews. The two men, Gary and Michael Cifizzari, of Taunton, would later be convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Neither had anything to do with the murder, say lawyers working for and with the New England Innocence Project. Instead, DNA evidence indicates the heinous killing was the work of a violent Rhode Islander who died in North Providence at age 60 in 2014. Here's how it all fits together: [Raimondo skirts criticism of La. governor who signed ‘fetal heartbeat’ law]( Against a backdrop of passionate disagreement in Rhode Island about installing the principles of Roe v. Wade in state law, Raimondo's State House press team referred inquiries about where she stands on the pivotal move by Governor Edwards to the Democratic Governors Association. [Lincoln police trying to find suspect who fled into woods]( LINCOLN - Police are seeking help finding a 29-year-old Chepachet man who ran away after a patrol officer stopped his car Friday morning. Not even a K-9 unit could find him. [Editorial: Political turmoil shakes Britain]( Brexit - the British voters' decision to quit the country's membership in the European Union - continues to ricochet against establishment politicians. Local Sports: [Yankees 4, Red Sox 1: New York sprinting away from Sale, Boston]( NEW YORK --- The Red Sox can't find a way to win with Chris Sale on the mound. Sale has been credited with a victory in just one of his last 16 starts, a barren stretch dating back to Aug. 12 of last season. It's a disturbing development for a pitcher who is supposed to be the club's ace, and Friday night at Yankee Stadium was the sort of occasion where the Red Sox sorely needed him at his sharpest. [Fishing Report: Striped bass stocks need protection]( Striped bass are under attack. The recent stock assessment indicates they are overfished and are subject to overfishing. Think of the striped bass in the water as a bank account: We are not only spending more than we are earning (overfishing), but the account is overdrawn (overfished).... And finally... [Newport to Middletown: Let’s share a high school]( MIDDLETOWN - Newport schools Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain will ask the Middletown Town Council to discuss the possibility of a joint Newport-Middletown high school during the council meeting Monday night. "The short time we sit and listen to each other may surprise us on what we may learn, especially if it means we can maintain the same structures and students we now service, PK-8," Jermain wrote in a memo. The Middletown Town Council president's response: "I would never support it." You are receiving this communication as a member of the Providence Journal.
