[@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at [The Providence Journal]( and this is the Daily Briefing. As far as jury duty stories go my experiences are probably pretty unique. The first time I was called, I sat in the waiting until the mid-afternoon when we were informed the case had been settled. We were thanked for our patience and told the day would mean we wouldn't be called again for at least three years. The next time I wasn't among those vetted for a civil case and then we were told the criminal judge was on vacation so another jury wouldn't need to be formed. Again, a three-year break from serving again. While my stories are pretty tame, should there be a concern about how potential jurors are picked? [The Journal's Katie Mulvaney reports that Justice Melissa Long is calling on the justice system to change rules around how and why jurors are struck from sitting on a trial.]( Katie explains how the current process works and why Long thinks it is time for a change. • Should Joe Biden remain in the race for president? We've heard from our Congressional delegation and the commenters on social media plenty, but what about those that actually play a role in nominating him at the Democratic National Convention? [In this week's Political Scene, The Journal's Katherine Gregg asked convention delegates how they feel about Biden.]( • The Fourth of July is now in the rearview mirror and that means we're one year closer to the country's 250th anniversary in 2026. So how should Rhode Island celebrate? [Journal contributor Frank Lennon suggests the state's RI250 commission look back at the bicentennial in 1976 for some inspiration.]( • An unusual work of public art is on display in Newport this summer, where 100 life-size elephants constructed out of an invasive weed have been placed on the lawns of Rough Point, the Breakers and Salve Regina University. [Great Elephant Migration Newport 2024 Rough Point] Guests view the Great Elephant Migration on the lawn at Rough Point on July 4, 2024. Justin Walker/Special to The Newport Daily News [The Journal's Savana Dunning checked them out recently and found they are already a popular attraction.]( • If summer has been a bit on the expensive side for you then Providence Restaurant Weeks is coming at just the right time. [Journal food and dining editor Gail Ciampa previews the two-week event that is now underway with a look at some can't miss deals.]( More from The Providence Journal [Find the latest obituaries here.]( [Subscribers can read the eNewspaper here.]( WORTH A READ 📰 'It's about to get wild': [Congress returns for pivotal week as Democrats sweat over Biden]( 🪐 [NASA crew emerges from simulated Mars mission]( after more than a year in isolation ⚾ [MLB All-Star Game rosters]( Pirates rookie Paul Skenes makes MLB history with selection RHODY RANKS Every day we receive emails ranking Rhode Island. If you were to choose one night of the year that would be the most perfect to eat under the stars, which would it be? Using publicly available weather data from WeatherSpark, cabinet manufacturer [Fabuwood]( identified the most perfect evening of summer in each state for an outdoor meal. They determined the ideal nighttime temperatures for alfresco dining to be around 75°F, and combined this with the date with the least chance of rain. This allowed them to map out the data and pinpoint the most perfect evenings of the summer in each state where temperatures are closest to 75°F and when the chances of rainfall are most limited. According to the weather data, Rhode Islanders are likely to experience their most perfect evening of summer on Sunday, July 21. On this night, the temperature is expected to hover around 73°F with a 14% chance of rain. [TODAY'S WEATHER]( ☁️ Mostly cloudy, hot and humid with a thundershower in spots in the afternoon.
