[@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at [The Providence Journal]( and this is the Daily Briefing. Like many of you, I woke up Tuesday morning, focused my eyes and saw the notification on my phone that a cargo ship hit a bridge in Baltimore early that morning. It was a couple of minutes that I saw the videos of the incident and started to read up on what was happening. We've become a little too familiar with bridge problems in Rhode Island lately, so we can sympathize with the folks in Maryland to a degree. In a state full of bridges crossing waterways where cargo ships travel to get to places such as Quonset Point, it also makes us wonder, what if that happened here? [The Claiborne Pell Bridge, commonly known as the Newport Bridge, is a suspension bridge.jpg] The Claiborne Pell Bridge, commonly known as the Newport Bridge, is a suspension bridge David DelPoio/Providence Journal The Journal's [Antonia Farzan had the same thought]( and [talked with experts about what would happen if a similar boat struck one of Narragansett Bay's spans.]( She also looks back in history to a couple of times when a bullet was dodged. Journal reporter Wheeler Cowperthwaite also talked with officials with the Quonset Development Corporation and ProvPort to see[if more cargo ships could be traveling this way as Baltimore's port is blocked off following the crash.]( • Rhode Island's river herring run is coming soon, and this year, the fish will carry crucial information on how the state's fish ladders are working. [The Journal's Tom Mooney reports on DEM efforts to learn more about how herring travel through a South Kingstown river and if efforts to assist them are working.]( • Rhode Island is full of great restaurants and when this year's James Beard Foundation nominations were released it only further cemented that fact. But with 10 semifinalists, the tough part is trying them all. Thankfully we have dining and food editor Gail Ciampa. [Join Gail as she takes a tour of the nominated restaurants and finds some of the best dishes on their menus.]( Prepare to be hungry. And if Easter has you thinking of traditional treats, Gail can also help. She's[rounded up three recipes sure to be hit]( on the dining room table this Sunday, or – [as she continues her "Highly Recommended" series]( – she points you in the direction of a Federal Hill bakery you've got to try. • The closure of the Washington Bridge's westbound side has changed life for many people and now another change could be on the way. [Providence Mayor Brett Smiley is considering the removal of bike lanes, including one that was installed following a fight over its installation.]( The concept has at least one person calling it a "knee-jerk" decision. • The boys high school volleyball season is about to start up and The Journal's Jacob Rousseau has [a look at 10 names to keep an eye on this year]( and explains why after winning the Division II basketball title, [Wayne McNamara and Lincoln are set to defend their volleyball crown.]( More from The Providence Journal [Find the latest obituaries here.]( [Subscribers can read the eNewspaper here.]( WORTH A READ 🗳️ RFK Jr. picks running mate.
