[@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at [The Providence Journal]( and this is the Daily Briefing. After having the privilege to coach my oldest son's travel basketball team for three years I took a step back this season. I handed over the reins, moved across the court as a spectator and gave more of my time to the program's board of directors. Either as a coach or watching from the stands I realize how tough it can be. The referees aren't perfect and have difficult calls to make. While travel is a high level of basketball for the age, the kids don't make things easy either and I certainly have been guilty of making my distaste for a call known a couple of times over the course of the season. That said, what referees do is hard and we're fortunate to have them – despite what I may say in the moment. I thought about this as I read today's column from Journal sports reporter Eric Rueb about a missed call at the end of Sunday's state basketball championship between eventual winner Classical and LaSalle. By all accounts, it was an incredible game that came down to the final seconds and maybe a call that wasn't made just before Classical hit the winning shot wasn't made. Should LaSalle be upset? Maybe, but instead here's what coach Mike McParlin said: “I give credit to that kid. There was no one play, no one call that influenced that entire game.” [C4 5206] Mike McParlin, La Salle boys basketball coach Eric Rueb/Providence Journal, file We see the stories when sportsmanship goes wrong, but [Eric's column is a great example of the opposite side and a reminder that none of us are perfect.]( • Could better protections for renters in Rhode Island help with the state's housing issues?
