[@Will_Richmond]( Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing. When news of alleged mismanagement and mistreatment at St. Mary’s Home for Children in North Providence broke in December it shook the state's child care system. Legislative oversight hearings where held and tours of the facility took place. Everyone was seeking answers. The Journal's Tom Mooney reports that "now the facility has issued a response about how it has addressed its failings – while offering some 'points of clarification' on some of the most egregious findings." But those monitoring the situation at St. Mary's are urging caution over the response saying they're attempting to "rewrite history." Just what are St. Mary's officials looking to correct? [Take a look at Tom's report here.]( • The state Senate is scheduled to vote later today on a proposed new "safe-storage" requirement for guns. Arguments for and against the bill were made in a committee hearing last week and a vote at the time was along party lines, so the writing may be on the wall in terms of what's going to happen before the full Senate today. [The Journal's Katherine Gregg takes a look back at the testimony and what's being proposed.]( • What's old is new again in Newport. Monday marked the ceremonial opening of Save the Bay's new Hamilton Family Aquarium in the downtown Gateway Center. [05_Aquarium_03182024.JPG] Thompson School fifth grader Ricardo Rodriguez views passing fish as he sits with a classmate in an underneath viewing tunnel of one of the oversized fish tanks at the new Save the Bay Aquarium in Newport. Kris Craig/The Providence Journal The Journal's Savana Dunning was present to see all the new exhibits and get the scoop on the favorites from both Save the Bay employees and a group from Newport's Thompson Middle School. [Here's what she found out.]( • Last week, The Journal's Alex Kuffner detailed the concerns about the decline of quohogs in Rhode Island's waters. He returns today with a guide to the beloved Ocean State shellfish. [Find it here.]( • Have you ever received a notice in the mail from the IRS, maybe making your heart skip a beat? There's a good chance you can get help locally with what's in that envelope.
