Mike Johnson, who led the House effort to overturn the 2020 election results, also happens to have been a fierce opponent of my efforts to investigate and impeach Donald Trump. Tom Emmer voted to certify the 2020 election result. Johnson voted to overturn it. That’s why Emmer failed and Johnson became Speaker — the Big Lie was the litmus test, and every single MAGA Republican got behind him. When a reporter asked Johnson about leading the effort to overturn the 2020 election, Republicans at his back drowned out the question with boos and told the reporter to “shut up.” But our democracy cannot afford for us to “shut up” or stay silent in the face of another Big Lie advocate taking control of a chamber of Congress. As two senior members of the Judiciary Committee, Johnson and I have fought over a host of key issues from guns to immigration to his penchant for deep state conspiracy theories. He’s anti-reproductive freedom. Anti same-sex marriage. And supports the gutting of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. That’s just for starters. But honestly, that’s most Republicans these days. Johnson is different because he was the lead architect behind House Republican efforts to overturn the 2020 election and still pushes out the Big Lie to this very day. But our run-ins long predate our service together on the Judiciary Committee, and go back to the first impeachment of Donald Trump. Mike Johnson served on Trump’s defense team during the first Senate impeachment trial. While I presented facts and evidence about Trump’s wrongdoings, Mike Johnson proudly parroted MAGA talking points to defend Trump.
