[Click here to grab your FREE ticket!]( [] [] DON YOCHAM More American than Baseball Back in my PIMCO days, the three biggest voices in bonds were Bill Gross, Paul McCulley, and Mohamed El-Erian. This trio steered PIMCO’s asset management ship and came as close to household names as any fixed-income geeks could get. They wrote profusely and spoke to the press constantly. But of the three, Paul had the most rhetorical wit. He was like a cross between John Maynard Keynes and Mark Twain (he’s a Keynesian, but I try to not hold it against him). He always managed to conjure up a folksy zinger to help frame in simple terms whatever complicated economic dynamic needed illustrating. And after this morning’s Retail Sales figure showed no signs of slowing spending I remembered when Paul told us to “never short American hedonism.” When you’re betting on a downturn and you think the American consumer is on the ropes, he’s not. The uniquely American trait isn’t a love for baseball. We’re not “live free or die” firebrands. We consume, plain and simple. In fact, the American consumer built the China we know today. I’m glad I remembered that as I consider what it takes to tip the economy into recession. But wherever that recessionary, depressionary, or stagflationary rubicon may lie in the future, the most pressing concern right now for markets is the debt ceiling debate. And whether you look at bonds, stocks, or gold – everything looks headed lower for the moment. [Click here now]( to find out how to trade it. [] Take What the Markets Give You.
