We get so wrapped up in our own lives and situations that sometimes we fail to see how the things happening in our daily lives are inextricably linked to the larger trend taking place in the world. When I talk in these pages about big picture items like new concepts of money, power, control, and disruption, it's easy to forget that these are not just high-minded, philosophical concepts. All these things tie back to the very practical, everyday things we see in life. Things like vaccine passports and mask mandates — centralized control. Or ever-increasing government regulation — centralized control. Or the Federal Reserve's broken policies devaluing your hard-earned dollar year after year — centralized control. Even Facebook, Google & Amazon — the Soviet Union could only dream of such centralized command-and-control architecture, encompassing not only mass surveillance and communication, but also a virtual centralized supply chain. A world where governments and corporations vie to control and dissect every aspect of our lives has given rise to candidates like Trump and AOC — both "outsider" reactions to the increasingly centralized control of the machine. The populist movements we've seen rising up: the trucker rallies, the Black Lives Matter movement, the Tea Party, Brexit — are similar reactions to the failure of central control. In the end, we're all making a choice at this very moment — whether we realize it or not: Centralized or Decentralized. On one hand, we have huge, unwieldy political and societal structures vying to preserve the status quo — centralization. On the other hand, a scrappy band of visionaries, building a decentralized future: bottom-up initiatives like Cryptocurrencies, DAOs and Open Source software that could change the very nature of how business and politics operate. For the Star Wars fans, it’s like The Empire vs The Rebel Alliance.
