{NAME} -- Republicans are eyeing Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's seat as one of their top opportunities in 2022. And they may have just found their ideal candidate. The latest reports are that top Republican leaders may have convinced Detroit Police Chief James Craig to run for governor. By running a law enforcement officer for this seat, it's clear that the Michigan GOP wants to run on a law and order message against Gov. Whitmer. However, if Chief Craig's past is any indication, he is willing to take that message to an extreme level. For example, Craig has said that more Detroiters should be armed in order to drive down crime. He's also said that terrorists are less likely to attack Detroit because a substantial number of its residents have concealed carry permits. It's unacceptable to allow Gov. Whitmer to lose to someone with such a cavalier attitude towards guns. We've seen a shocking number of shootings recently, representing a heartbreaking return to a pre-COVID status quo that we've needed to address for far too long. It's even more outrageous that Republicans would run a candidate like this when just last year, Gov. Whitmer herself was the subject of an assassination plot by heavily-armed far-right militia members. Gov. Whitmer worked tirelessly for the people of Michigan in their time of need. Now we need to do everything in our power to make sure we support her re-election against a formidable right-wing challenger. [If you believe that a far-right, pro-gun police chief is the wrong person to serve as governor of Michigan, we need your support today.
