{NAME} -- Republicans will do everything they can to cling to power in 2022. The first step in their plans? GOP-controlled legislatures around the country are unleashing what NBC is calling a “tidal wave of voter suppression.” Here's the current situation: - There are at least 361 voter suppression bills in 47 states that will restrict access to the polls or deny some voters access all together. - Some of the worst offenders are in swing states that are CRUCIAL to expanding Democratic majorities in Congress: Georgia, Florida, Ohio, and more. - New restrictions include fewer early voting opportunities, bans on ballot dropboxes, and even criminalizing people who provide food and water to those waiting in hours-long lines at polling stations. These bills disproportionately target people of color and are an assault on the American ideal of “one person, one vote.” What these extremist Republicans are doing is shameful, but they continue their crusade because they have no other way to win. By rigging the system, right-wing fanatics will keep winning elections even as their voting base shrinks. And every time a Republican wins, that means more tax cuts for wealthy corporations, more conservative judges striking down progressive legislation, and further erosion of the rule of law. The good news is that Democrats pulled off historic victories in 2020 despite voter suppression efforts. It's an uphill battle, but if we start now, we can win again in 2022.
