According to a new analysis from eToro, the average holding period for U.S. stocks was ten months in 2022. This is down from more than five years in the mid-1970s. Those who have short holding periods are informally referred to as traders. That’s in contrast to those with long holding periods, who are often characterized as investors. Why do people trade? The simple answer is they believe doing so will help them achieve better returns. “The gap between best and worst performing sectors last year was a record, and active funds bested passive for the first time in years,” Ben Laidler, global markets strategist at eToro, wrote on Thursday. “So being proactive can pay.” While there have been periods when active investors outperform passive investors, those periods are rare. Furthermore, history shows that of the few who do beat the market in a given year, most fail to outperform consistently in subsequent years. People are free to do whatever they want with their money. Occasionally, it is possible to have a view about an opportunity that’s so airtight that it leads to market-beating returns. And oftentimes, people just get lucky. But again, it is extremely difficult to beat the market with short-term trades. Even history’s most prominent geniuses fail at this.
