[Silver Ridge Market Report Logo] Dear Reader, Just because a story gets a lot of news coverage doesn't necessarily mean it's representative of what's happening worldwide. This is the issue with news, a business incentivized to address its audience's interests and not necessarily its needs. Consider news coverage of layoffs. If you've been following the news, then you've probably seen multiple stories about companies announcing what appear to be significant layoffs. You might even think the economy is in the throes of mass layoffs across industries. According to Bloomberg data cited by BofA, the weekly news stories mentioning layoffs spiked to record levels recently. Many of these announcements have been concentrated in the tech sector, which is responsible for less than 3% of total employment in the U.S. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Wednesday, the tech-job-heavy information sector is the only industry group experiencing layoff activity above pre-pandemic levels. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data from the Federal Reserve Economic Data, layoff activity in the U.S. remains very low. I don't blame you if you're having trouble wrapping your head around this. It's all very counterintuitive. Tens of thousands of layoffs have been reported prominently in the news. These are big, visceral numbers. However, Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows there were 1.4 million layoffs in October. In fact, employers have been laying off more than 1.2 million employees a month for the past two and a half years. So those stories of layoffs you read about are pretty small relative to the ongoing pace of layoffs, which by the way are very small relative to the 158.9 million people employed. That said, there is a danger that excess coverage of the negatives in the economy becomes a self-fulling prophecy. Let's hope we avoid that.
