I have a bit of a confession… in all my years in business, I’ve never made any type of a Black Friday offer. It’s not that I don’t like getting a deal on Black Friday. And I certainly love to put together promotions and marketing sequences. But I’m not a big fan of using Black Friday promotions. And I think they can be toxic for many businesses… Because offering discounts and deals is a slippery, scary slope. Sure, it’s great for a short-term cash infusion, but it can destroy your positioning. Here’s what I mean: If you discount your flagship $2,000 offer to $297 for Black Friday, you just reset the pricing expectation in your prospects minds. Yes, you’ll get lots of sales on BF, but for the rest of time, whenever you make an offer, there will be a little voice in the back of many of your prospect’s minds saying “yeah… it’s only $297 when it goes on sale though…” For the sake of a quick hit of cash, you turned your $2000 offer into a $297 offer. I always want to compete on value, not pricing. Once you start to compete on pricing, it’s just a race to the bottom. In general… discounting cheapens your product, and it hurts your positioning. I want my products to be a premium solution… things that people look forward to being able to buy. I want them to be the premier leaders in the market and something to be treasured. Not something to be grabbed off the sale rack. Of course, never say never… and I can think of three good reasons to offer a deal or a discount. - You’re bringing a new product, service, or membership to the market for the first time and you’re looking to make a big splash with a “first-ever offer” before the price goes up. - You’re looking to test out a new offer… or a new way of marketing something. - It’s part of a larger plan – i.e., you’re looking to bring a lot of new people into your world all at once. Any one of these could be a good enough reason (for me personally) to consider making a special “one-time-only” deal. And if all three happened to be true… Well, it might be time to break all my rules. And all that means you just might want to watch your inbox on Friday – it just might be the first time I’ve ever had a Black Friday special offer. 🙂 best regards, Jeff P.S. Happy Thanksgiving!!
