[The Scan] [In Haiti, disaster relief efforts have improved since the earthquake] January 13 — Friday It's seven years this week since the 7.0 earthquake that rocked Haiti, turning its capital city into ruins and killing more than 200,000 people. Late last year, Haiti was hit hard again, this time by Hurricane Matthew. But the disaster relief effort has been much-improved — reflecting big lessons learned after the earthquake. We're heading into another anniversary: Princess Diana made a powerful statement when she walked through a live minefield and then detonated a mine in Angola, on Jan. 15, 1997, televised for the world. Paul Heslop, who was there, recalls that day. Plus, did you know that online romance scams are a nearly trillion-dollar-a-year industry? One woman who was preyed upon now works with a hotline and resource center to help others in the same position. Also, in Oberwil-Lieli, a small, wealthy town in Switzerland, opinions vary about whether to take in refugees. And, hear from a journalist in Germany who is paying close attention to US President-elect Donald Trump. Read on for more. [Here are the real lessons from flawed responses to Haiti's disasters] The earthquake that rocked Haiti seven years ago, today, and Hurricane Matthew, in October, are two completely different disasters — one urban, the other, rural; one arriving without warning, the other, visible in the distance — but both amounted to enormous humanitarian crises and offer great lessons for relief efforts. [Victims of online romance scams, there's a place you can go for help] Victims of online romance scams suffer some of the highest financial losses of any internet-based crimes, the FBI says. [What it's like to cover Trump for a German audience] Germans are closely following President-elect Donald Trump's path to the White House, says Matthias Kolb, a reporter with the Munich-based daily Suddeutche Zeitung. [Way more migrants are now sneaking across the US-Canada border] The number of people crossing the US border into Canada illegally, and requesting asylum after they're caught, is rising quickly. The migrants are not held in detention centers like in the US. And Canada often obliges, and lets them stay. [A Swiss town is divided over whether to take in refugees] Residents of Oberwil-Lieli are divided over whether their town should continue to shut out refugees and pay a fine instead. [The day Princess Diana stepped into an active minefield] In Jan. 15, 1997, Princess Diana walked through an active minefield in Angola. Here's how land mine ban advocate Paul Heslop, who helped Diana detonate a land mine in front of an audience of international reporters, remembers the day. Enjoying The Scan? Forward it to a friend!
